Why these particular paintings became famous
The Mona Lisa owes much of its fame to a theft rather than to a brushstroke.
When the painting was stolen from the Louvre in 1911 it made front pages worldwide for two years, and it returned a global celebrity. Other landmarks earned their status differently: Guernica as protest reporting, The Starry Night as the image that defined post-impressionism, and The Persistence of Memory as shorthand for surrealism. Movement plus artist is the pairing most questions are built on.
