What the world’s flags are actually saying
A flag is the smallest possible summary of a country, and almost none of it is decoration.
Vexillology — the study of flags — treats every stripe and star as a claim about history, faith or geography. The Nordic cross marks a shared medieval past, the pan-African red, gold and green trace back to Ethiopia and Ghana, and the crescent found across North Africa and Asia is Ottoman inheritance rather than a religious requirement. Once you learn the families, unfamiliar flags stop being random colours and start being readable.
Scoring: one point per correct answer. 0-3 makes you a Beginner, 4-7 an Explorer and 8-10 a Master. Your best result is kept in this browser, so you can come back and try to beat it.
