Borders are stranger than any map suggests

Straight lines on a map usually mean a treaty; wobbly ones usually mean a river.

Borders record old arguments. Colonial administrators drew straight lines across Africa and the Americas with rulers, while European frontiers still follow rivers and ridges negotiated over centuries. The leftovers are the interesting part: enclaves entirely surrounded by another country, exclaves cut off from their own, and villages where the line runs through the buildings. These oddities are exactly where general knowledge quizzes go looking for questions.
