The Olympics as a record of the last century
The modern Games have been cancelled three times, always because of war.
Revived in Athens in 1896, the Olympics have absorbed boycotts, world records and shifting definitions of amateurism. The symbols carry meaning worth knowing: the five interlocking rings stand for five inhabited continents, and their colours were chosen so that every competing nation’s flag contained at least one of them. Host cities and marathon distance are the other two details that appear again and again.
