Two publishers, eighty years, one shared vocabulary

Nearly every question comes down to knowing whether a character is Marvel or DC.

DC arrived first with Superman in 1938 and Batman a year later, establishing the costumed archetype. Marvel’s answer in the 1960s was flawed, argumentative heroes with money problems, which is why Spider-Man and the X-Men felt new. Secret identities, origin cities and the hero’s first appearance are the three details worth carrying, because most trivia questions are really asking for one of them.

Scoring: one point per correct answer. 0-3 makes you a Beginner, 4-7 an Explorer and 8-10 a Master. Your best result is kept in this browser, so you can come back and try to beat it.
