How much of the ancient world still runs your day
The 60-minute hour and the 360-degree circle both arrived from Mesopotamia.
Sumer, Egypt, Greece, Rome and the Maya are studied together because each left infrastructure the rest of us still use: writing systems, legal codes, calendars, aqueducts and the base-60 arithmetic behind clocks and angles. The distances involved are easy to underestimate — Cleopatra lived closer in time to the Moon landing than to the building of the Great Pyramid, which was already ancient when she was born.
