The scale that makes the Second World War hard to grasp

It was fought on every inhabited continent and reshaped borders that are still argued over today.

Between 1939 and 1945 the war drew in more than 60 countries and killed an estimated 70 to 85 million people, most of them civilians. Its turning points cluster in 1942 and 1943 — Midway, Stalingrad, El Alamein — when the initiative changed hands on three fronts almost simultaneously. Understanding that sequence explains why D-Day in 1944 was an opening of a second front rather than the beginning of the end.
