The periodic table is a map, not a list
Element symbols look arbitrary until you learn which language they were borrowed from.
Many symbols come from Latin rather than English, which is why sodium is Na from natrium, potassium is K from kalium, iron is Fe from ferrum and lead is Pb from plumbum. The table’s layout carries just as much information: columns group elements that behave alike, so the noble gases sit inert on the right while the alkali metals on the left react violently with water. Position predicts behaviour.
